The 12 Houses in Vedic Astrology

Bhavas, commonly called houses, organize a Kundali into twelve areas used in traditional chart interpretation. House topics are broad themes, not fixed outcomes.

A quick guide to the Bhavas

  1. 1st: self, body, and outlook
  2. 2nd: resources, family, and speech
  3. 3rd: effort, communication, and siblings
  4. 4th: home, foundations, and comforts
  5. 5th: learning, creativity, and children
  6. 6th: service, routines, and challenges
  7. 7th: partnership and agreements
  8. 8th: change and shared resources
  9. 9th: higher learning and beliefs
  10. 10th: work and public responsibilities
  11. 11th: networks, gains, and aspirations
  12. 12th: rest, expenses, and retreat

Why one house is never the whole story

The ascendant helps establish the house sequence, which is one reason accurate birth time and location matter. Astrologers also consider the sign in a house, its ruling planet, planets placed there, and connections elsewhere in the chart.

House meanings are traditional interpretations, and methods vary between schools. A house placement cannot guarantee an event or replace practical advice from a qualified professional.
