What Is a Kundali?
A Kundali, also called a Janma Kundali or birth chart, is a map of planetary positions for a person's birth time and place in the Vedic astrology tradition.
The details behind a birth chart
A chart calculation uses the birth date, local birth time, and geographic location. The location and the time zone in effect on that date are used to convert local time correctly. If a time is uncertain, some chart details, especially the ascendant and houses, may be less reliable.
Signs, houses, and planets
The ascendant, or Lagna, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the recorded birth time and helps establish the chart's house layout. Houses are areas of life in the traditional system; planets are interpreted by their sign, house, and relationships with other placements.
A Jyotish reading may also discuss the Moon's Rashi and Nakshatra, planetary periods called Dashas, and specialized divisional charts. These elements are considered together; a single placement should not be treated as a full reading.
Reading a Kundali thoughtfully
Vedic astrology is a traditional interpretive practice, not a scientifically established way to predict individual outcomes. Chart readings vary among practitioners and should not replace qualified professional advice. Use the chart as a prompt for reflection rather than a guarantee.
