Planets in Vedic Astrology: The Nine Grahas
Jyotish uses a group of nine Grahas, or astrological influences. The group includes the Sun and Moon as well as Rahu and Ketu, which are calculated lunar nodes.
The Navagraha
The nine are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru or Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu mark the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the apparent path of the Sun. They are mathematical nodes, not physical planets.
In astrology, each Graha has traditional symbols and associations. A chart reading may consider a Graha's sign, house, relationships with other placements, and timing period. These meanings belong to a cultural interpretive system and should not be confused with the scientific study of astronomy.
Read placements in context
No single planet placement is a complete reading. For example, traditional interpretation considers the chart's ascendant, house rulerships, aspects, and the question being explored. Different Jyotish lineages may weigh these factors differently.
Astrological symbolism is not a scientifically validated way to diagnose, measure personality, or guarantee future events. Use it as cultural or personal reflection, not as a replacement for qualified professional advice.
